What is Lyme Disease? Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete, Borrelia bergdorfi. It is transmitted by the bite of the very small deer tick Ixodes scapularis as well as other ticks. These ticks are common on the East Coast but also occur in the midwest and southwest, as well as other parts of the world. They transmit Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, bartonellosis and other illnesses, commonly referred to as co-infections. It is not at all uncommon for someone with Lyme disease to also exhibit symptoms of other illnesses. Downloadable info on lyme is located further down this page. What are Lyme Disease Symptoms?
